Day Four

7:15am -- Lined up in formation preparing for breakfast!

I'm hoping you parents (and others) reading this realize that after formation there are morning announcements and then breakfast...after breakfast they are lined up again and march to class..there are only so many ways I can word that for each day!! ~grin~

First class of the day, Conflict Resolution, then it's on to a class taught by members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Throughout the week, the kids will participate in classes put on by different agencies. This will allow them to see that even though they have an interest in law enforcement, they don't necessarily have to be a police officer.

Cpl. Will Jordan taught the next class, D.U.I. Awareness. This class helps to show the kids the dangers of drinking and driving. The kids also get to see a pair of D.U.I. goggles which simulate alcohol impairment, making even the simplest task difficult.

Time for lunch!

After lunch the kids proceeded to Buskirk Field where they watched a K-9 Demonstration. Deputies showed how the K9's track, sniff out drugs and Deputy Mike Dyer was even brave enough to put on a bite suit and let the dog bite him!!

After the K9 Demo the kids had some free time before dinner. They were sent to their floors to hang out, rest up and socialize. (plus, the Staff needed to rest too!)

4:00pm -- Dinner

6:00pm -- One of the most popular activities at camp is the Mock Accident. Each year we set up mock accident to show campers what happens when there is a fatal accident and how it is investigated.

This year, the accident was set up on the parking lot of the Marshall Football Stadium. Three vehicles were brought in and positioned to resemble an actual accident. Two of the vehicles were actually involved in an accident, therefore they fit together well. The third vehicle, which had also been wrecked, was brought in for the Camp to use at their will and pleasure.

Senior counselors get to participate in this class. Make-up and effects are used to simulate injuries caused by the accident. Police Officers, with their cruisers, Cabell County EMS and the Huntington Fire Department all responded, using lights and sirens, and proceeded as if they were working a real accident. The Jaws of Life were brought in and the top of one vehicle was cut open in order to remove one of the "victims".

While this is going on, Deputies are "interviewing" the "driver" of one of the cars. This driver was Staff member Becky Collins who acted as if she had been drinking. The kids watched as the Deputies put Becky through the Field Sobriety Tests, interviewed her and placed her under arrest.

Other Deputies were busy taking measurements and drawing the crime scene.

The kids were able to witness this accident from start to finish. Let's hope they paid attention....they'll need it later.
