Day Three Continued

With lunch time complete, the kids were divided up into their respective Dictricts for the first of their District Meetings. The Staff members spoke with their Districts about which department they worked for, what their job entails, how long they have been with their department and what the Sheriffs' Academy was all about. The kids were encouraged to ask the officers questions about law enforcement or camp or to just talk about being away from home or how nervous they were. This gave the Staff a chance to try and ease the mind of any homesick campers and gave the kids a chance to get to know the officers better.

The next class was Violent Behavior, Avoiding Family/Dating Violence. From there they all went to Buskirk Field for an Equestrian Demonstration. Sheriff Wolfe and Captain Beth Brumfield, of the Huntington Police Department, explained the duties of an officer who works on horseback. Capt. Brumfield demonstrated how the horse is used for crowd control, arrests and showed the different movements that a trained police horse can perform. The kids were then able to ask questions and pet the horse.

Time for dinner!!

After dinner, the kids had quite a few activities to choose from. The Staff hung out with the kids as they played kickball, sand volleyball and basketball. For the kids who just wanted to "chill out", Cpl. Beckett stayed with them in the lounge of Towers East. While in the lounge, campers were entertained with an impromptu concert by Junior Steve Heckert, Junior Chris Vance, Junior Jared Beckett, Senior Artie Badger and Senior Josh Manypenny. The kids in the lounge all began singing a very appropriate song, Good Riddance (Time of Your Life), by Greenday. As the song says......

So take the photographs
And still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf of good health and good times

...I hope the Academy is a memory they will carry with them for years to come.

8:15pm -- As the kids filed back in to go to their rooms to change, the Cadets had stop and vote in the Primary Election. The nominees from this morning had to be narrowed down. Who campaigned the hardest? We'll find out later!

8:45 -- Time for KARAOKE with Steve Smith!!!

Socializing, singing, trying not to laugh too hard, and some REALLY scary break dancing!!! What is the Gorilla Dance, anyway?!?! Another great time for the kids to unwind and socialize.

11:00 - Lights out!!!!
